This website tells of an epic battle that ended the lives of two of my great
grandfathers who faced each other in the same historic event.
One wasTadhg O'Kelley Chief of Ui Maine Ireland the ancestor of my
grandfather Albert O'Kelley and
the other Sigurd the
Jarl (Earl) of Orkney
Scotland; a Viking and the ancestor of my grandmother
Julie
(Bowen) O'Kelley. Tadhg O'Kelley commanded his troop of men from
Ui Maine of the
providence of Connaught Ireland and
Sigurd the Jarl of Orkney
commanded his troops from Orkney Island Scotland and they met at
Clontarf Dublin Ireland on good
Friday April 23, 1014 in the battle that some call the Cross of
Christ verses the hammer of Thor. By the day's end both men
laid dead, one defending his homeland and the other trying to
conquer Ireland. Tadhg O'Kelley
appears in Irish verse and
Sigurd the Jarl of Orkney
appears in Norse verse, both of my
grandfathers were fighting over the same dirt and neither lived
to possess it.
